The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has established standards for integrity, security, and environmental practices in international shipping. They have outlined guidelines to ensure maritime workers have timely access to medical services and relief from their duties. However, these guidelines must cover comprehensive legal, educational, and mental health procedures crucial for improving workplace safety.
Maritime workers must realize the benefits of accessing mediation, counselling and support incorporating public legal education. Moreover, mental health support helps them navigate complex legal systems. The IMO of 2020 has recognized the need for training, monitoring, facilitation, technical and political collaboration, ships and equipment suitable for the purpose, environmental stewardship, and legal services.
