During this extraordinary period with the Coronavirus (COVID-19), there is widespread anxiety and uncertainty as people set out to juggle personal, family, organisational, and public needs. This period particularly highlights intricacies in educational, legal, social, political, and spiritual practices. Our Human Resources are being stretched to the limit to prevent unprecedented harm to self and others. Just as there are personal and regulatory challenges, including travel restrictions and a seeming weakening of such human rights as freedoms of mobility and association, there are also opportunities and strengths. The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (2019) defined human rights as being attributable to all individuals regardless of characteristics ranging from their ethnicity to language. The International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights is an example of a human right covenant. The American Civil Liberties Union (2015) referred to this as “… a key international human rights treaty, providing a range of protections for civil and political rights”. The International Covenant on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights is another example of a rights-based covenant that can be a guide to establish checks. These covenants include a range of international equality rights in such areas as income security, work, housing, etc. Rights are inherent to all persons. 

Opportunities in the COVID-19 period include creating personal and organisational missions, visions, value systems, and strategic plans to readjust current circumstances. For example, you may ask yourself in the aftermath of a changing society. What do you want to achieve? How do you see yourself and others doing this? What do you value the most, and how does this inform your current and plans? Short- and long-term planning is needed to optimise health, welfare, and safety. There is a range of steps to build resiliency, and they incorporate improving online communication, interpersonal, leadership, transferable aptitudes, and strategic analysis. These steps include arranging for online family and formal support sessions ranging from check-ins to counseling and therapy to enhance your well-being. These supports can help develop resiliency to meet structural and process-based change at home, work, or in the community. Counseling knowledge and practices offer promising and strategic supports to transform and transition from personal troubles and public threats to opportunities. These threats include fear of outsiders, including xenophobia, distress, work-based stress, post-traumatic stress, vicarious (secondary) traumatization and compassion fatigue.

Pressure can be a natural part of our lives. From time to time, that pressure may develop into stress that you may feel to be unbearable due to a gradual build-up of tensions or perhaps a sudden unexpected incident. To reach such a situation and stage is not an indication of weakness, but rather a natural consequence of life’s events.

The dictionary definition of “counseling” covers:

  • communicating

There are many forms of counseling that are guided by several accepted theories. The Trident Foundation provides telephone, online, or face-to-face counseling to assist participants who may be isolated in terms of time and space.

Counseling support for individuals, couples and their families who are involved, for example, with stressful jobs, such as in emergency services, the military, justice or the health fields, is not always readily available. It may only be accessible in the form of short-term therapy. “Problems in living” can be, for example, both chronic and stressful. Personal, social, and spiritual practices are often instrumental in reducing the impact of distress upon individuals (Steed & Downing, 1998).
